Tonight at 8/7c on the CW, The Vampire Diaries returns with a new vampire in town, and a whole new style. Is it just us, or can you picture Nina Dobrev and Paul Wesley starring in Grease on Broadway? They've taken us back to the Civil War era, and now they're rocking the 1950s. Tell us, do you like the show's retro moments, or do you prefer modern TVD style?

At the end of “The Turning Point,” Elena confessed that she wanted to be with Stefan no matter what it took. But we’re a little skeptical. Why? Maybe because it wasn’t long after that when she happened upon Katherine’s picture and she stormed out! We’re starting to wonder if the conflicted brunette can commit to the tumultuous perils of being in love with a Vampire. Does she have what takes or should Stefan move on to someone who’s truly willing to risk everything for true love?
“They were like no eyes she had ever seen, black as midnight, the pupils dilated like a cat’s. They filled her vision as he leaned toward her, bending his head down to hers. [Elena] felt her own eyes half close, losing focus. She felt her head tilt back, her lips part.”
Here’s a hint: The “black as midnight” orbs described above aren’t Stefan’s. Damon may be the immortal Elena hates most in the world on TV, but in the books…well, L.J. Smith fans know there’s definitely more to the story than that…

Don’t get us wrong, we love Elena and Stefan, but in The Vampire Diaries books, L.J. Smith paints a tension-filled love triangle between Stefan, Elena, and Damon that we can’t get enough of. Elena loves Stefan…but there’s something about Damon, overpowering, irresistible Damon, that she can’t tear herself away from. And, as far as Damon is concerned, Elena should be his and his alone.

As most TVD fans know, the series began with L.J. Smith’s first novel, The Awakening. The first season of TVD on TV covers some of what’s featured in the first book, but if you’re intrigued by the intense love triangles in the show, The Awakening and L.J’s second book, The Struggle, will give you more to sink your teeth into. In the show, Stefan has come to Fell’s Church (not Mystic Falls) to find Elena. He claims, “He has to know her.” But in the books, it’s Elena who’s after Stefan…and Damon who spots Elena first. (Finders keepers? You’ll have to read and find out).
If you can’t get enough of Damon in the show, you will love the way his character mysteriously develops and casts his spell on Elena in the books. In fact, there’s a lot to love about the books. Find them here, and tell us what you think.
